Many people are trying for scholarships. Sure there are millions of them out there. However, it might be the time to try other approaches in locating scholarships. These methods are free, too. First, try the high school guidance office. It has a list of local scholarships for current high school students. Second, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web. Finally, try the college's financial aid office. It has a list of private scholarships offered from outside organizations and companies. Sometimes a college major will list scholarships on its website too.

Great information! There are plenty of scholarships waiting for applicants, and many are given for the oddest criteria. Just start looking and anyone can find one.

the FAFSA is available online on January 1st of the new year (so you definitley can't fill it out in November.) No school really tells you when you should apply for your FAFSA, but the sooner the better. (It's said that the earlier you apply, the more financial aid you could possibly get.) However, one problem is that you have to get your taxes/income from your family's (and your own, if applicable) employers - which usually takes at least until february or march. the earlier the better, though.

Comment on GPA Isn’t Everything Scholarship by David Henning

These are some of my thoughts on the scholarship "GPA Isn't Everything"

There are plenty of reasons why a student’s GPA isn’t everything. Let me begin by persuading you to believe that a GPA does not measure intelligence nor intellectual capability. One’s GPA simply allows early employers to identify who has been a good or poor test taker throughout his or her academic career.

The reason this can be a meager evaluation or assessment of one’s knowledge, and an insecurely structured way of measuring one’s potential, is the mere lack of substantial evidence that an individual is qualified or not to perform at an expected level of excellence. If placed in an employer’s shoes, would you want a 4.0 student with little information retention and a lack of communication skills, or the 2.5 student that can execute responsibilities to the highest standards? This may seem on the extreme end of this concept, but how many times is the more than capable “C” Student overlooked due to the inadequacies of the GPA based student appraisal?

The most successful person is going to be a well rounded individual with numerous competitive advantages, and the ability to articulate his/her strengths, weaknesses, and accomplishments. I feel that my GPA is not sufficiently representative of the value level I have attained as a student, but furthermore it is composed of the involvement I contribute to my school and community. To put it simply, my GPA isn’t everything.
