Laurence Foster Memorial Scholarship

The Laurence R. Foster Memorial Scholarship Fund is created in the memory of a long-time public health leader in Oregon. This scholarship awards $1000 to $10000 per scholar and is intended to help the students in Oregon who would like to pursue a career in public health.

Eligible applicants are those undergraduate students of nursing, medical technology, physician assistant who are entering their junior or senior-year health programs. A preference will be given to students who are already working in public health and graduate students who are majoring in public health. Qualified students of various race and culture are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.

To apply for the Laurence R. Foster Memorial Scholarship Fund, all applicants are required to submit a one to two pages essay that answers the following questions:

  1. What does “public health” mean to you?
2. How does this field differ from other health and medicine fields?
3. What public health aspect do you intend to practice and what are the health/population issues impacted by that aspect?
4. How do your education and volunteer/work choices prepare you for your vocation?
5. What project or other personal participation in public health have you completed or are involved with that you are most proud about?
6. Describe the purpose and desired outcomes of the endeavour, as well as your role in it.
