Scholarship Programs For People With Vision Loss

The American Foundation for the Blinds is offering several scholarship programs to help those students with vision loss to pursue their studies. Students may apply to one or more these scholarship programs using just one application as long as they meet all the criteria set in each specific program.

The major requirements to apply for any of the AFB offered scholarships is an essay that states the field of study you are pursuing and why you have chosen it, your educational and personal goals, your work experience, extracurricular activities, and a statement about how you will use the scholarship award.

Students also need to submit the official transcript, proof of post-secondary acceptance stating that you have been accepted to post-secondary studies in an accredited program; 2 recommendation letters from your teachers, academic advisors or rehabilitation counselors; and a certification of legal blindness secured from your ophthalmologist or optometrist stating that you have a best corrected visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the better eye, and/or a visual field of less than 20 degrees in the better eye.

There are likewise additional requirements in each specific scholarship. Selected scholars will be awarded $500 to $2500 scholarship money depending on the program they applied. Deadline for AFB scholarship application is on March 31, 2007.
